Solomon Schechter Middle
School provides Jewish
adolescents with a community of their own, where they can
grow and flourish, and where learning is an exciting challenge
that brings out the best in every individual.
We are dedicated to the development of the unique potential within each child in a nurturing atmosphere that encourages intellectual, social, ethical and spiritual growth. The General Studies curriculum is based on the national and New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards and utilizes student-centered, experiential activities that make learning refreshing, relevant and rewarding.
The Jewish Studies curriculum reflects our belief that we have a sacred responsibility to ensure the continuity of the Jewish people through Jewish education.

Set in our state-of-the-art laboratory, our Science program motivates students to examine and investigate the world around them using sophisticated tools and technology. Students learn how to apply the scientific method as they become members of a science-literate population. Areas of study span earth, physical and life sciences, with opportunities for honors level courses and exciting projects such as, Earth Day Fair and the Science Fair. |
|
Our Reading and Language Arts programs immerse students in a literature-rich environment. Reading from a variety of genres, students learn to view literature both critically and analytically. Through expository, creative and report writing, they gain important organizational and communication skills. |
|
Students rise to the challenges of our Social Studies program as they learn how to research and analyze issues that have shaped history and to explore world geography and culture. Courses include: American History, World Cultures and a survey of World History.

We're on the move, taking our students out of school and making the world their classroom. Courses in the Fine Arts are brought to life with visits to the theatre, museums and symphony. Environmental Studies are enriched by a unique three day camping experience at the Teva Learning Center where environmental education is integrated with Jewish concepts and values. The Mentor Program pairs adolescents with professionals in their fields of interest to see and experience, firsthand, the reality of various careers.
| Technology takes center stage in the new computer lab and in every classroom. Our Middle Schoolers use the Internet and e-mail for research and to communicate and collaborate with peers in other schools. Students master word-processing, desktop publishing, and multimedia technologies, enabling them to create sophisticated projects and presentations in all curricular subjects. |

Physical Education means more than playing games at the Solomon Schechter Middle School. Our program emphasizes teamwork, skill development, sportsmanship, confidence and a positive attitude towards lifetime fitness. Instruction encompasses hockey, football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, and health. Interscholastic Sports electives allow students to compete on athletic teams and develop their skills at an advanced level. |

Judaism comes alive as students live and learn Jewish practice through Hebrew language, textual studies, ritual observance, t'fillah (prayer), and the study of Jewish history and ethics.
Modern Hebrew links
students to the contemporary Jewish world. Our introductory Hebrew language
program, Mechina, enables those with minimal or no background to study at their
level of ability.
Through the study of a wide variety of texts, including Mishna, Talmud and Tanach, students discover the values that guide our lives. By fostering an understanding of the content and structure of our liturgy, t'fillot, prayers, become meaningful and inspirational.
Young adolescents naturally have strong feelings about ethics and fairness. Our aim is to help them develop a sense of moral and ethical behavior by studying Jewish texts and using them to encourage introspection, empathy and acts of tzedakah, charity, and g'millut chassadim, loving-kindness.
